Ways to Strive High and Stay Sane while Getting a Degree

Organization, networking, knowing one's teachers and taking time to relax are all key to succeeding in getting a higher education.

Getting a degree in college or university is a stressful process. One can easily become burned out and allow the work to become overwhelming. Or one can choose to slack off and fail to achieve the standards one originally set. There are ways to ensure that one is successful not only in reaching one's goals and obtaining that degree, but also in staying sane while doing so.

Organization

This is the number one key to student success in college or university. There are many ways to be organized, whether it be through a system of binders or folders on a laptop. Regardless of approach, the important thing is to keep all lecture notes together, make detailed commentary on the assigned texts and don't lose books, photocopies or other materials. When the time comes to write that essay or exam, one should be prepared.

Further, don't wait until the last minute to start anything. Research well ahead of the deadline and try not to write the essay or report the night before either. Grades will rise for revised assignments. De-stress by pretending the work is due earlier than it is, get it done before it's due and relax, knowing the work is complete.

Network

Successful students usually draw on the resources available to them at their academic institution. Whether it be course support, advisors, study groups, tutors, or other services designed to enable one to succeed, don't be afraid of seeking them out!

Also important are friends and acquaintances. Whether for emotional support when a difficult assignment is due, for research suggestions, or for proofreading a paper, one's friends are vital in assisting the student's academic success.

Teachers

Teachers aren't just talking heads that deliver information and grade work. They can also be resources for additional assistance, enabling the student to connect more deeply to the material and to make sense of their reasons for selecting their course of study.

Students who take the time to get to know their professors are more successful. Ask questions in class. Show interest in the material. Participate in groups. Share a fascination with the subject that will impress the teacher and inspire the other students. Go to the professor's office hours to talk about assignments. They will be able to put a face to the work one has handed in, an association that can only lead to higher grades.

Balance

Even though at times the academic tasks one is expected to accomplish on the road to a degree can seem overwhelming and cruel, it is crucial to take time out to relax. Getting a good night's sleep. Enjoying a nutritious meal. Having fun at the movies or at a party. These are all ways to take care of one's health or ensure that one feels fully alive amid the grueling pace of a full course load, one often combined with work.

If students follow these four suggestions, their grades are guaranteed to rise while their stress levels will undoubtedly drop!
